At some point you will probably make a highlight video of your son or daughter playing in a sport. This may be for a family event, team event or even for a recruitment video. For each of these purposes, the type of video, quality of video coverage and what is included make a difference.
For Recruitment - there seem to be differences in opinion as to how effective film is. Film can be very effective in showing the highlights of a player. It can also be highly overdone - making a player into something they are not. Here are some tips for putting together a recruitment video:
For Recruitment - there seem to be differences in opinion as to how effective film is. Film can be very effective in showing the highlights of a player. It can also be highly overdone - making a player into something they are not. Here are some tips for putting together a recruitment video:
- Make sure the quality of the video is good. There is nothing worse than watching a wobbly, poorly angled fuzzy video with lots of people yelling in the background. Capturing good video is very important. For sports like soccer, football and lacrosse - you should shoot the game from above the field in HD. You can pay someone to do this, or you can do it yourself if you invest in the correct gear (see my previous blog).
- Show the type of player you really are. If you are a defensive player - show that. Don't show video of you shooting on goal if that is not you.
- Do not send full games. Your video should only be about 5-10 minutes in length. Only take clips from about 3 seconds before you get the ball or make a play. Then only show the play you make. Make sure to take video clips from several different games.
- Make sure that your video is very modest. Do not add lots of music, graphics, or special effects. You may want to add a quick description of you at the beginning of the video that states your name, GPA, ACT/SAT scores, etc... Showcasing a little about you.
- Post the video on you-tube and send out the link.
- Make sure to follow-up. Never just send out a link without following up. Some e-mail systems filter out links. Other coaches may not even see your e-mail. Making a follow-up call lets them know you care as well as lets you know if you need to send them a copy of the video.
